Whispering Hills Kennels Dachshunds

Harley The Dachshund was developed in Germany more than 300 years ago to hunt badgers. During the 17th century the Dachshund developed into smooth and longhaired coat varieties, and in 1890 wirehairs were added as a third variety. During this development, two different sizes were emerging based on the type of game the dog pursued; dogs weighing 30-35 pounds were being used not only on badgers but wild boar and the smaller dogs proved effective against foxes and rabbits. Importation into America dates back to 1885. In 1935 Dachshunds were added to field trials to encourage hunting capacity and conformation and temperament. The Dachshund is clever, intelligent and courageous to the point of rashness with all his senses developed. They are great family pets and lapdogs. Three different coats have been developed; smooth-haired, wire-hired and longhaired. All are acceptable. The Dachshund shown is Harley, the sire of many of our puppies.
